Innocent Eréndira and Other Stories

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1978. 1st US Edition. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth, spine gilt, top edge stained orange, original illustrated dust jacket.

First US edition of Gabriel García Márquez’s earliest short fiction collection in English, advance review copy. Largely composed of stories the Colombian Nobel Prize-winning author wrote between the ages of 19 and 25 years old, this luminous assortment exemplifies Kafka’s stylistic and thematic influence on his work, the development of his distinctive narrative voice, and his nascent ability to employ magical realist elements as social metaphor. Includes the title novella, which was given an avant-garde film adaptation by Brazilian filmmaker Ruy Guerra in 1983, with an original screenplay by García Márquez, and eleven enchanting stories, including some of his best-known: "Eyes of a Blue Dog," "Death Constant Beyond Love," and "Eva Is Inside Her Cat." First printing, with complete number row to copyright page. Translated by Gregory Rabassa, one of García Màrquez's regular translators. Dust jacket designed by Guy Fleming, who designed several of the US jackets for García Márquez. Author photo to rear panel of dust jacket by Sophie Baker. Publisher's advance review slip laid in. Fine in unclipped dust jacket. Item #12448
