Fresh Air School. Exhibition of Paintings
Pittsburgh: Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, 1972. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's stiff printed paper wraps, contents loose in signatures.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings by Abstract Expressionists Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, and Walasse Ting, held at the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, in 1972. Underscoring the "freshness" and levity of the artists' work, the show presented canvases defined by vibrant, saturated palettes, negative space, and dripping, gestural strokes that integrated western action painting with eastern aesthetics. While it was Ting who suggested the title of the exhibition, Francis later used the name to refer to his own series of paintings from the early 70s inspired by his experiences in Jungian analysis. This catalog, whose contents are loose in signatures, includes three double-page original color lithographs by each artist, with smaller reproductions in black-and-white, brief biographies, and an introduction by the museum’s director Leon Anthony Arkus. Minor soiling and light edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12426
