Plato’s Cave / Rothko’s Chapel / Lincoln’s Profile
Venice, CA/New York: New City Editions/Artists Space, 1986. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.
Artist's book by late Los Angeles-based artist Mike Kelley, a document and extension of his performance and conceptual art project of the same name. Presented at Artists Space in New York, the "triple threat show" featured performance, sound, and visual installation, with Kelley reciting confrontational monologues with actress Molly Cleator and Sonic Youth providing live noise accompaniment among a display of provocative sculptural works. Kim Gordon later described feeling as if her band was the "Greek chorus" accompanying Kelley, her close friend who famously provided a photograph for the cover of the band's album Dirty (1992). This book contains over thirty black-and-white appropriated photos and reproductions alongside Kelley’s monographic text, his "longest and most elaborate" written work, according to him. Book designed by Kelley and production designer Patti Podesta. Light rubbing and edgewear. Near fine. Item #12412
