[Five Erickson Educational Foundation Pamphlets]

Baton Rouge, LA: Erickson Educational Foundation, 1973. Mixed Editions. 5 vols., octavo, publisher's stapled stiff printed paper wraps.

Five educational pamphlets published by pioneering non-profit organization Erickson Educational Foundation (EEF), dedicated to transgender research, healthcare, and advocacy. EEF was established by Reed Erickson, a transgender man who, upon inheriting a family fortune, pursued gender-affirming care with endocrinologist and sexologist Harry Benjamin (who famously worked with Christine Jorgensen). He soon used his wealth to launch EEF, which would go on to effectively direct the course of trans research, largely in support of Benjamin’s work. EEF additionally provided significant contributions to ONE, Inc., and the Johns Hopkins Gender Identity Clinic, while also publishing educational material, most notably these pamphlets, published in 1973. This small collection, the copies of Dr. Agnes C. Nagy, a medical practitioner who worked with Benjamin, includes "Legal Aspects of Transexualism," which provides guidance on topics such as creating a new public identity post-transition, health insurance benefits, employment, and job training; "Information for the Family of the Transexual," one of the earliest educational resources for relatives of "adult transexuals" and "gender disturbed children"; "Information on Transexualism for Law Enforcement Officers," which addresses systemic transphobia in the legal system; "An Outline of Medical Management of the Transexual," delineating diagnosis, etiology, therapeutic attitudes, and medical procedures; and "Counseling the Transexual," which comprises interviews with five "experienced and enlightened" therapists. All volumes first editions except "Legal Aspects of Transexualism," a third revised edition (originally published in 1971). A listing in the rear of "Legal Aspects" cites two pamphlets not present here, "Religious Aspects of Transexualism" and "Guidelines for Transexuals." All are rare in the market. Dr. Nagy's inkstamp to upper wrap of each volume. Minor toning and rubbing, else fine. Item #12336
