Feminine Hijinx

Madras/New York: Hanuman Books, 1990. 1st Edition. 32mo, publisher's stiff textured natural paper wraps, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of poet, essayist, and critic Dodie Bellamy’s first book. Based in San Francisco, Bellamy—widow of the late Kevin Killian—is best known for her raw, experimental style that challenges conventional narrative forms by merging fiction, memoir, and cultural critique. Bringing together two long pieces, "Complicity" and "The Debbies I Have Known," this miniature collection is representative of Bellamy’s role in the Bay Area-based New Narrative style movement. Issued here as number 41 in art critic Raymond Foye and Italian painter Francesco Clemente's Hanuman Books series. Founded in 1986, the small press, whose administrative and editorial functions were housed in the Chelsea Hotel, produced their series of small handmade books in Madras, India. Cover photo by Loring McAlpin. Unclipped dust jacket with minor toning and soiling. Near fine. Item #12242
