Desire. Drawings-Photographs-Installations-Videotapes-Mixed Media

Rotterdam: Con Rumore, 1989. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.

Survey of work by Dutch performance and video artist Lydia Schouten, inscribed by her to fellow video artist Dara Birnbaum. A pioneer of her craft, Schouten produced kaleidoscopic works integrating video, photography, installation, and sound to critique gender roles and contend with sexual violence, loneliness, and social alienation. Illustrated with color plates of work spanning from 1981 to '88; with texts by Schouten, lists of performances and exhibitions, and a bibliography. Inscribed by Schouten to first page: "For Dara, / with love / Lydia Schouten / 8-25-89." Influenced by Warhol, Vito Acconci, and Dennis Oppenheim, the late Birnbaum was a pioneering figure in video art, often analyzing the ideological aspects of mass media and the aesthetics of political manipulation.
