Emergence. Introduction by Kate Millett

New York: Chelsea House, 1977. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in silver, black endpapers, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

"They’re a new kind of woman. You haven’t seen them before. Neither have I. At least not in pictures." First edition of American actress and photographer Cynthia MacAdams’s first book. A classic second-wave feminism photo series, Emergence gathers photos of women "of strength and power," including several famous artists, musicians, writers, and intellectuals, such as Judy Chicago, Meredith Monk, Ellen Burstyn, Marisol Escobar, Mary Ellen Mark, Laurie Anderson, Gloria Steinem, Lily Tomlin, Diane di Prima, and others. While the book originally received a tepid critical response, with the New York Times deeming it "essentially a celebrity album," it has since been reappraised as a touchstone of 1970s feminism. In 2018 Netflix adapted the book into a docuseries "Feminists: What Were They Thinking?" which features interviews with MacAdams’s original subjects. Illustrated with black-and-white plates; with an introduction by writer and activist Kate Millet, who is also pictured in the book, and with a poem by DiPrima. Private library inkstamp to title page. Some dustiness to cloth; unclipped dust jacket with approximately one-inch triangular chip to upper panel and light edgewear. Very good. Item #12186
