New York: Red Dust, 1986. 1st US Edition. Octavo, publisher's black cloth, spine gilt, original illustrated dust jacket.

First US edition of French writer Phillipe Sollers’s experimental novel, with an essay by his close friend and intellectual ally Roland Barthes. An avant garde intellectual with a prolific career as a novelist, critic, and cultural commentator over several decades, Sollers first gained attention with experimental novels in the 1960s before founding influential literary journals Tel Quel and L’Infini. He became known for his incisive essays on literature, art, and contemporary society, maintaining a lasting impact on French literary culture. Translated by Paris-born novelist, playwright, and visual artist Ursule Molinaro and American author Bruce Benderson. Beginning her career working for the UN, Molinaro went on to translate several works into English (by the likes of Hermann Hesse, Nathalie Sarraute, and Christa Wolf), frequently with Benderson, her close friend and currently the executor of her estate. Originally published in France in 1965. Fine in unclipped dust jacket. Item #12147
