Carrie Mae Weems
Philadelphia: The Fabric Workshop/Museum, 1994. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by photographer and videographer Carrie Mae Weems, originally held at The Fabric Workshop/Museum (FWM) in Philadelphia, and presented as the US entry in the 10th Dakar Biennial in Senegal in 1996. Weems first started taking documentary photos in her capacity as a labor activist. She studied at the Studio Museum of Harlem, and soon broadened her practice, making use of autobiography, narrative, staged photography, video, textiles, and performance to address issues of race, sexual politics, class, and power, especially as they pertain to the representation and experience of Black women. The FWM show foregrounded "The Apple of Adam’s Eye," a large folding screen printed and embroidered on fabric that reworks the Biblical story, and made during her residency there. Illustrated in color and black-and-white; with a foreword by Marion Boulton Stroud, an introduction by curator Mary Jane Jacob, and an essay by bell hooks. Text in English and French. Errata sheet laid in. Fine. Item #12141
