Rauschenberg at Dwan: Drawings

Rauschenberg at Dwan: Drawings. [Poster]

Los Angeles: Dwan Gallery, 1965. Large folding color-lithograph poster, printed to verso (measures 22" x 25" open).

Folding offset lithograph poster-invite published on the occasion of an exhibition of work by American painter Robert Rauschenberg held at the Dwan Gallery in Los Angeles, in 1965. The exhibition, Rauschenberg’s second solo show at the gallery, presented the transfer drawings he began to create in the early 1950s, in which he used solvents to lift images from found materials (such as photographs and newsprint) onto paper, subsequently enhancing them with color, line work, and additional collaged elements. Highlighting the diversity of his practice beyond his well-known Combines, the exhibition boosted Rauschenberg’s acclaim after winning the top painting prize at the 1964 Venice Biennale and marked a pivotal moment for Virginia Dwan’s eponymous gallery, which expanded to New York the same year and became a key venue for avant-garde and emerging American artists, specifically those associated with Minimalism, Conceptual, and Land art. Folds in fours. Some soiling to verso, light rubbing to folds. Very good.
