Item #12055 Cathedral. Raymond Carver.
Cathedral

Cathedral. Stories

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1983. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's light grey cloth over light grey paper, upper board and spine stamped in silver, original dust jacket.

First edition of short story writer and poet Raymond Carver's third collection of short stories, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. Carver understood this collection to mark a shift in his career towards a more optimistic and confidently poetic style, saying in a 1987 interview with French literary journalist Claude Grimal "The story 'Cathedral' seemed to me completely different from everything I'd written before. I was in a period of generosity...The character there is full of prejudices against blind people. He changes; he grows. The sighted man changes. He puts himself in the blind man's place. The story affirms something." Owner notes in light blue ink to lower endpaper. Light toning to board edges, light foxing to endpapers; unclipped dust jacket with light toning and edgewear. Very good.
