Two Cents. Works On Paper by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Poetry by Kevin Young
Miami: Centre Gallery, Miami-Dade Community College, 1995. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher’s stiff black paper wraps lettered in gold.
"Day-tripping / in Washington Square / Park, dropping / out – STONED / ON SAMO..." (from "City-as-School"). Catalog published in conjunction with a 1995-96 exhibition of works on paper by post-pop artist Basquiat. Shown at the Centre Gallery in Miami, the Castellani Art Museum in Buffalo, and the Otis Gallery in Los Angeles, the exhibit presented sketchbook pages and small paintings alongside poetry by poet Kevin Young, a friend of Basquiat's and recent director of Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Young had already produced verses inspired by Basquiat and his work at the time of the exhibit; during the installation process at each gallery he wrote original poetry on the walls, on paper, plastic, cardboard, and other materials. Illustrated with color and black-and-white plates; with essays by curator (and current Fine Art Chairman at Sotheby's) Amy Cappellazzo, artist Elizabeth Alexander, and poet John Yau; and an exhibition checklist and transcriptions of Young's poems. Presentation copy from art dealer and early promoter of Basquiat's work Lio Malca, with his inkstamp to title page ("Courtesy of: Leo Malca"). Fine. Item #12007
