Prattonia Nineteen Hundred and Sixty Three

Brooklyn, New York: Pratt, 1963. Quarto, publisher's illustrated paper covered boards, black endpapers.

1963 yearbook for Pratt Institute, Brooklyn’s venerable art and design school. Each issue of Prattonia is produced by a senior or group of seniors so that its design often mirrors the institute’s visual sensibility and pedagogy. This edition was designed by Ryszard Horowitz, a Polish immigrant who came to Pratt to study commercial advertising graphic design with Alexey Brodovitch and serve as an assistant for Richard Avedon. His yearbook design prioritizes editorial collages that mix historical etchings with contemporary symbols and pops of color. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photos of students and faculty, campus life, and student clubs. An evocative example of 1960s design. Moderate rubbing to boards, corners bumped, upper hinge split. Very good. Item #12001
