Light and Motion
Worcester, MA: Worcester Art Museum, 1967. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stapled stiff paper wraps, lenticular plastic cutout adhered to verso of die-cut upper panel, french flaps.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of light and kinetic art held at the Worcester Art Museum, in 1967, with a die-cut lenticular cover designed by celebrated Italian designer Bruno Munari. Beginning in the late 1940s, Munari began to experiment with light as a medium, leading to his use of rotating polarizing filters, colored transparencies, and projectors to create dynamic visual works. The cover reproduces Munari’s piece "Polariscop No. 3" (1966); additionally, the catalog features works by noted kinetic and Op artists Chryssa, Abraham Palatnik, Julio Le Parc, Martial Raysse, Otto Piene, Heinz Mack, Takis (Panayiotis Vassilakis), Gunther Uecker, and others. Illustrated with black-and-white plates; with texts selected and edited by curator Leon Shulman, a checklist, and bibliography. Fine. Item #11953
