Ana Mendieta. A Book of Works

Miami Beach: Grassfield Press, 1993. 1st Edition. Large octavo, publisher’s black cloth, spine and upper board stamped in bronze, illustrated endpapers, original black cloth slipcase stamped in bronze with illustrated label to upper panel.

Limited edition monograph on Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist Ana Mendieta, edited and with text by American art historian and curator Bonnie Clearwater. Recognized as a key figure of the body and land art movements, Mendieta came to the US as a political refugee from the Castro regime, earned her MFA at the University of Iowa, and ultimately landed in the New York art world, where she became involved in feminist politics. Her husband, the sculptor Carl Andre, was controversially acquitted of her 1985 death, but the circumstances—a fall from their 30th-floor bedroom window—remain mysterious. Mendieta left behind a number of incomplete projects, among them an unfinished book of photo-etchings documenting her Rupestrian Sculptures, a series of female forms carved into remote caves on the outskirts of Havana rooted in her interpretations of Taíno myths and cosmologies. The book reflects her ongoing concern with ephemerality, ritual, and the body’s inscription into landscape. This posthumous edition reproduces the unfinished work in facsimile, with additional writings published for the first time. Illustrated with black-and-white and color plates; with an introduction by Clearwater, notes, and a chronology. Number 150 of 275 copies signed by Clearwater on the limitation page. Fine in original slipcase. Item #11937
