Original promotional poster published in conjunction with a 1981 exhibition of work by downtown photographer Peter Hujar held at the A. Robert Samuel Gallery, in New York. Although Hujar worked from the mid-1950s until 1973 as a commercial photographer, he enjoyed a reputation as a chronicler of New York's downtown scene during the 70s and 80s, until his death from AIDS in 1987. Most of his portraits were made in apartment photo studios and portray friends and acquaintances from the gay subculture, including the likes of Fran Lebowitz, Candy Darling and Divine. Established by the eponymous Robert Samuel Hardison, the A. Robert Samuel Gallery (later Hardison Fine Arts) was silently co-managed by Robert Mapplethorpe and Sam Wagstaff, both of whom also presented work in the space, one of the few to represent gay male artists exclusively. This poster features a photo captured in Hujars studio of New York writer Linda Rosenkrantz and her husband Christopher Finchs daughter Chloe. Hujar and Rosenkrantz met in '56, and remained close friends until his death. She was recently portrayed by actress Rebecca Hall in Ira Sachss film Peter Hujar's Day (2025), starring Ben Whinshaw as the photographer.
