Exhibition catalog for American multimedia artist and collagist Barbara Kruger's first traveling European exhibition, with stops at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland. Born in 1945, Kruger initially worked as a graphic designer and art director before switching over to the contemporary collage-making practice for which she is now internationally renowned. Layering found black-and-white photos, often from mass-media publications, overlaid with bold extracts of text, Kruger merges the private and public as a means of investigating consumerism, desire, feminism, and individual autonomy in a late-capitalist economy. As Kruger had only begun her collage work in the early 80s, this catalog from 1983 includes some of her earliest work. Illustrated with full page black-and-white reproductions throughout, interwoven with essays examining her body of work from post-modernist art critic Craig Owens and feminist film director Jane Weinstock.
