The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors Even Again
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK: University of Newcastle, 1966. Slim folio, publisher's side-stitched stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Artist’s book published in conjunction with proto-Pop artist Richard Hamilton’s reconstruction of Modernist master of subversion Marcel Duchamp’s major glass artwork. In 1952, Hamilton was introduced to Duchamp’s The Green Box, a collection of notes and drawings for his piece "The Large Glass" (originally titled "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even"), a massive piece he worked on from 1915 to 1923 in New York created with two panes of glass and materials such as lead foil, fuse wire, and dust. Exhibited in 1926 at the Brooklyn Museum, it broke upon transfer, and was left deliberately damaged by Duchamp (the original now resides at Philadelphia Museum of Art). Hamilton translated and published The Green Box in 1960, and curated an exhibition of Duchamp's work at the Tate, with the inclusion of his own methodical reconstruction of "Large Glass." Working under Duchamp’s close supervision, Hamilton constructed the faithful replica at Hatton Gallery in Newcastle before transporting it for the Tate show. This companion volume comprises photos, drawings, diagrams, and annotations, merging the original piece with Hamilton’s reconstruction. Illustrated in black-and-white, with two green tissue guards. Light toning and edgewear. Very good. Uncommon. Item #11767
