Snarf. [Nine Issues]

Milwaukee & Princeton, WI: Kitchen Sink Enterprises, 1972-78. Mixed Printings. 9 vols., slim quarto, publisher’s stapled illustrated paper wraps.

Substantial run of Denis Kitchen’s surreal, satirical underground comix series. A foundational figure in American underground comics, Kitchen founded Kitchen Sink Press in 1970, best known for publishing "Gay Comix," one of the first comics to feature openly queer creators. He also established the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in 1990 to protect First Amendment rights in comics. Begun in 1972 during the peak of the movement, "Snarf" was one of three major series Kitchen launched early in his career (alongside "Bizarre Sex" and "Death Rattle"). It ran for fifteen issues, until 1990, offering a platform for emerging and veteran cartoonists, issuing work by Robert Crumb, Art Spegelman, Trina Robbins, Peter Poplaski, Joel Beck, Will Eisner, and others. The present group includes issues 2-9 and special issue "Mondo Snarfo" #1. Illustrated in black-and-white, with covers in color. All first printings except "Mondo Snarfo," which is a second printing. Moderate toning, creasing, and edgewear. Very good overall. Item #11627
