The Smell of Us

Brooklyn: Cameron + Brown, 2015. 1st Edition. Oblong octavo, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.

Photobook published in conjunction with the release of famed provocateur Larry Clark’s 2014 film. Shot in Paris in the filmmaker’s classic improvisational style, The Smell of Us follows a group of disaffected Parisian teens as they drift through a life of skateboarding, casual sex, and drug use. Drawing on Clark’s longstanding fascination with adolescent rebellion (some have deemed it the French version of Kids), it received largely negative reviews upon release, with critics citing its lack of character development and narrative depth, although it was noted for its visual style. Published by Cameron Brown’s Brooklyn-based creative studio, this book gathers 120 color film stills, along with Clark's screenplay. Text in French. One of 250 unnumbered copies. Fine. Item #11619
