Antoni Tàpies. Recent Works
New York: Pace Gallery, 1993. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated die-cut wraps, black endpapers.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies held at New York’s Pace Gallery in 1993. The son of a Catalan nationalist father, Tàpies studied law before devoting himself to art in the 1940s. He was influenced by Max Ernst, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró, as well as philosophy and Eastern thought, and his work from the early 70s was marked by Catalan nationalist symbols and sympathies. He cofounded the postwar Spanish art movement Dau al Set, connected to Surrealism and Dadaism, but later transitioned from surrealism into pintura matérica, a practice concerned with using non-artistic materials, including clay, string, and waste paper. Illustrated with color plates; with a critical essay by art historian Robert S. Lubar, a cheklist, chronology, and list of exhibitions. Fine. Item #11386
