First edition of performance artist Laurie Anderson’s documentary account of her 1990 multimedia solo show. Marking a shift from her earlier abstract work to more social critique, "Empty Places" integrated electronic music, processed violin, storytelling, and visual projections to address social issues such as homelessness, political decay, and urban desolation under the Reagan administration. A precursor to her better known Stories from the Nerve Bible (1992), this collaged compendium documents the tour’s live tracks (primarily from her album Strange Angels) from its premiere at BAM throughout North America and Europe, with text, photos, graphics, drawings, and reproductions of handwritten notes and newspaper clippings.
