To Have Done with the Judgment of God. Sparrow 34
Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stapled printed paper wraps.
July 1975 issue of Black Sparrow Press’s periodical featuring a radio play by French dramatist, poet, and essayist Antonin Artaud, translated by Clayton Eshleman and Norman Glass. Artaud's final work, "To Have Done With the Judgment of God" was commissioned for French radio but withheld from broadcast due to its anti-establishment sentiments and distressing sound design. Eshleman, best known for his work translating César Vallejo and his lifelong interest in surrealism and mythology, founded literary journals Caterpillar and Sulfur while frequently contributing prose and poetry to avant-garde publications. Published monthly between 1972 and '78, Sparrow featured poetry, prose, and essays, showcasing emerging and established writers. Each issue focused on a single author or theme, allowing for an in-depth presentation of a writer’s work. Light soiling to wraps. Very good. Item #11219
