Vogue Interzone. Special Simulated Edition
New York: John Wayne Spider Monkey, Inc. [Christof Kohlhofer], 1992. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.
Artist’s book by German Pop artist Christoph Kohlhofer, inscribed by him to experimental fiction writer Gilbert Sorrentino. A painter and photographer, Kohlhofer is primarily associated with the capitalist realist movement, a commodity-based artform that critiques and comments on Western corporate ideology. Formatted as a special issue of Vogue (the magazine's publisher sued and had the book withdrawn from the market), this self-published monograph comprises the artist’s drawings, paintings, and cut-outs from his early career up to the early 90s, real and parody advertisements, and contributions by W.S. Burroughs, Tobey Crockett, Udo Breger, Carlo McCormick, and others. The book is dedicated to his friend and collaborator David Wojnarowicz who died the year of publication, and reproduces a postcard from him to Kohlhofer. Illustrated throughout in color and black-and-white; with a CV and list of credits. Text in German and English. Inscribed by Kohlhofer to first page: "to Gibert, / C. Kohlhofer / 3-3-93." Sorrentino was a Brooklyn native, longtime Stanford professor, and maverick novelist, best known for his metafictional Joycean satire Mulligan Stew (1979). He worked as an editor at Barney Rossett's Grove Press, co-founded Neon magazine with his childhood friend Hubert Selby Jr., and published over thirty books. Fine. Item #11158
