A Book Concluding with As a Wife Has a Cow. A Love Story

Barton, VT: Something Else Press, 1973. Facsimile Reissue. Quarto, publisher’s cream laid paper wraps printed in red and black.

Facsimile reissue of a short story by modernist iconoclast Gertrude Stein, illustrated by pioneering Spanish Cubist artist Juan Gris, produced by Something Else Press. The two first met in 1910, but became estranged during the first World War. They rekindled their friendship in 1920 and Stein became a significant advocate for Gris's work while he faced professional challenges. Originally published in 1926, this volume (one of only six Gris illustrated during his career) includes reproductions of the four lithographs in the original edition produced by Galerie Simon (later Galerie Louise Leiris) in Paris. Founded by Fluxus progenitor Dick Higgins in 1963, Something Else Press issued avant-garde "intermedia" books and pamphlets into the mid-70s. Illustrated in black-and-white (with one plate in red and black-and-white). Fine. Item #11009
