Amphigorey. Fifteen Books by Edward Gorey

New York: G.P. Putnam Sons, 1972. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's illustrated cloth, black endpapers, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of mid-century illustrator Edward Gorey’s sinister and whimsical anthology collecting all of his published books up to that time. The compendium comprises fifteen books, published between 1953 and 1965, including The Unstrung Harp, The Doubtful Guest, The Object-Lesson, The Willowdale Handcar, The Westing Wing, and others. The title is a play on the French amphigouri, denoting convoluted speech or gibberish. The book also marks the debut appearance of the "Gorey cat." He would continue to include the whiskered character in his work throughout his career, appearing on all covers of the subsequent Amphigorey anthologies. Illustrated in black-and-white. Cellotape residue to corners of boards; unclipped dust jacket with minor abrasions to flap-folds from cellotape removal, light edgewear and some sunning to spine panel. Very good. Item #10988
