In the Crack of Dawn
Lucerne/Brussels: Mai 36 Galerie/Yves Gevaert, 1991. 1st Edition. Small folio, publisher’s stapled illustrated paper wraps.
Collaborative conceptual comic book by American artists Matt Mullican and Lawrence Weiner, produced under the auspices of Mai 36 Galerie in Lucerne and artist’s book publisher Yves Gevaert in 1991. A key figure in the development of Conceptual Art in the 1960s, Weiner redefined sculpture by using language as his medium to subvert the established dynamics between artist, viewer, and object. Using hypnosis to access his subconscious in live performances, Mullican is known for his spontaneous, diagrammatic work that merges drawing and cosmology. Uniting the visual and verbal elements of two generations of Conceptualism, "In the Crack of Dawn" features Weiner’s bold shapes and fragmented language paired with Mullican’s pictographic imagery. Illustrated in color. One of an unstated number of copies in wraps (published simultaneously with a signed hardcover edition of 100 copies). Light creasing and edgewear. Very good. Item #10983
