Million Man March

New York: Crown Trade Paperbacks, 1995. 2nd Printing. Quarto, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.

"Let us not be conformed to this world, but let us go home transformed by the renewing of our minds and let the idea of atonement ring throughout America." Journalist Michael Cottman’s account of the historic Million Man March, signed by Cottman and the book's photo editor, and Smithsonian curator, Deborah Willis on the title page. On October 16th, 1995, an estimated 400,000 to 1.1 million Black demonstrators gathered in Washington DC to address issues facing the community. Organized by controversial leader of the Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan alongside other civil rights organizations, the event was one of the largest demonstrations in US history. Speakers and supporters included Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Rosa Parks, Cornel West, Maya Angelou, Marion Barry, and Kurt Schmoke (while other leaders such as Mary Frances Berry and John Lewis disapproved). Published shortly after the event took place, this overview comprises Cottman’s text on the origin and events of the demonstration, including chapters on the roles of women and young people. Illustrated with black-and-white photos. Second printing. Fine. Item #10651
