Roots of Time. A Portrait of African Life and Culture
Garden City, NY: Zenith Books/Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1974. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
First edition of writer and academic Margo Jefferson and anthropologist Elliot P. Skinner’s study of African culture and history, intended for young readers. A longtime arts, culture, and theater critic for the New York Times and contributor to dozens of publications throughout her career (including the Village Voice, Newsweek, and Ms.), Jefferson won the Pulitzer for her work in 1995. She is best known for her memoir Negroland (2015), an account of growing up a part of Chicago’s Black elite in the 1960s, which received widespread acclaim and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her first published work, Roots of Time addresses subjects such as economic systems, marriage, politics, religion, and arts in African culture. Illustrated with black-and-white drawings by children’s book author and illustrator Jerry Pinkney; with a guide to pronunciation and an index. Issued simultaneously in hardcover and paperback (as here). Glue residue to last page and inside lower wrap from sticker removal. Some creasing, rubbing, and edgewear. Very good. Item #10530
