Shock Treatment

San Francisco: City Lights, 1991. 2nd Printing. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.

Inscribed second printing of Karen Finley’s first book. A member of the notorious "NEA Four" in 1990, a group of artists who were denied funding due to the controversial nature of their work, Finley is renowned for her provocative performance art, spanning a variety of mediums including literature, visual art, film, and music, and tackling themes of female and sexual oppression and rage among other societal taboos. Titled after her AIDS-era performance piece, this landmark collection comprises monologues, prose, poems, and sketches (drawn by "patients" enduring shock treatment), including "The Constant State of Desire," "We Keep Our Victims Ready," "It's Only Art," and "The Black Sheep." Praised by the likes of Kathleen Hanna, Eileen Myles, and Justin Vivan Bond, the text was recently reissued in a 25th-anniversary edition. Illustrated in black-and-white. Inscribed "to Tanya" and signed by Finley, with a drawing, to title page. Originally published in 1990. Minor edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #9111
