Black In White America

New York: Grossman Publishers, 1967. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff printed paper wraps.

First edition of late photojournalist Leonard Freed’s internationally revered civil rights series, signed by him on the title page. Born in Brooklyn and originally a graphic designer, Freed became interested in photography while working for Harper’s Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch, who encouraged him to pursue the medium. His contributions to major magazines such as Life, Look, Paris-Match, the Sunday Times Magazine of London, Libération, and Fortune, along with the present series, eventually led him to Robert Capa, who invited Freed to become a member of his Magnum Photography Collective in 1972. Considered a landmark in photojournalism, Freed’s portrait of Black life in the US comprises images he took across the country from 1963-65 including photos of the March on Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr., prisoners, families, funerals, and church-goers in the Jim Crow South. Illustrated with black-and-white plates. Light edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #8909
