Children of the Welfare Hotels. Photographs by Marilynne Herbert

New York: Citizens' Committee for Children of New York, Inc., 1985. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher's stapled stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.

Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of photojournalist Marilynne Herbert’s landmark series documenting the lives of impoverished children in New York, held at the Pindar Gallery in 1985. Partially funded by the Citizens’ Committee for Children (CCC) and inspired by the work of photographers such as Lewis Hine, Herbert’s images depict the conditions of welfare hotels in Manhattan and Brooklyn that children and their families are consigned to live in. Founded in 1944 by Eleanor Roosevelt, Justine W. Polier, and Benjamin Spock among other social activists, CCC was one of the first nonprofit child advocacy organizations in New York. Illustrated with twenty black-and-white plates; with a preface by Cathrina Savos, a member of the committee's board of directors. Light creasing and edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Uncommon.
