Sketches & Watercolors of the Twenties & Thirties

New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1968. 1st Edition. 8 loose black-and-white plates in two folded printed sheets of descriptive text, original paper chemise with a color reproduction mounted to upper flap, original printed mailing envelope.

"'Life...is a matter of being born'; but 'Art is a question of being alive.'" Catalog in eight loose prints published in conjunction with a posthumous exhibition of visual work by Modernist master E.E. Cummings held at NYC literary landmark Frances Steloff’s Gotham Book Mart in 1968. Cummings was one of the most inventive poets of the 20th century, while also being a prolific painter. Despite participating in various exhibitions and releasing an art book in the 1930s, he was little known as a visual artist during his lifetime. Upon his death in 1962, he bequeathed over 1600 paintings–many never seen by the public–to his widow, Marion Morehouse. Morehouse subsequently donated many of the works to Steloff, who proceeded to organize several exhibitions over the years. The first held at Gotham, the show presented sketches and watercolors Cummings produced during the interwar period. This catalog comprises eight loose black-and-white plates in two printed sheets of descriptive text housed in a paper chemise with a color reproduction mounted to the upper flap. One of 1000 unnumbered copies. Contents fine, original mailing envelope with moderate soiling and wear. Item #8863
