I'm Into You Now. Some Work from 1980-2010 Exhibited at 80WSE

New York: NYU Steinhardt, 2010. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's stiff paper wraps.

Exhibition catalog for the first major survey of Marlene McCarty’s work, shown at NYU’s 80WSE gallery and curated by Michael Cohen. McCarty worked as a part of the AIDS activist artist group Gran Fury, under which she designed subversive protest posters that appropriated the polished visual language of advertising. Her early personal work also incorporated text that often dealt with sex and gender. In the ‘90s she began making large-scale drawings using ballpoint pen, first of nude portraits of young girls who had committed matricide or patricide and later of humans and gorillas engages in social and sexual relations. This catalog presents color reproductions of her work, an introduction by Kathleen Hanna (she taught a class with McCarty), and essays by the curator, Viola Kolarov, and Catherine Lord. With two folding plates. Fine. Item #8850
