The Beats. Photographs by Larry Fink

Bologna, Italy/New York: L'Artiere Edizionitalia/powerHouse Books, 2014. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's gray cloth, spine and upper board stamped in dark gray, photo-illustrated label mounted to upper board, light gray endpapers.

First edition photobook by late American photographer Larry Fink, signed by him on the title page. Born in Brooklyn, in the late 1950s Fink began taking private classes with Viennese photographer Lisette Model, who became a friend and encouraged his work. One of his earliest forays into the field, his documentation of the Beats began in New York after he dropped out of college, leading him to travel across the US among a cohort of "delusionary revolutionaries" over the course of a year. This monograph gathers a selection of the photos he captured between 1958 and '59, when he was 17 years old, as the group's unofficial resident photographer (in Fink’s words, they "desperately needed a photographer to be with them, to give them gravity, to live within them, record and encode their wary but benighted existence"). Illustrated with black-and-white plates; with a poem and essay by Gerald Stern and Robert Cordier, one of the Beats captured here, and facsimiles of texts from Fink's diaries of the period. Italian issue, published simultaneously in the US. No dust jacket, as issued. Fine. Item #8847
