Paintings and Drawings 1957-1975

London: Art Council of Great Britain, 1977. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher’s stiff plain paper wraps, original printed dust jacket.

Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition presenting work by Minimalist/Abstract Expressionist painter Agnes Martin at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1977. The first exhibition of her work in Europe, presenting paintings, watercolors, drawings, and constructions dating from 1957 to 1975. Playing a pivotal role in her reputation abroad, the exhibition demonstrated her movement in style from the beginning of her career, through her peak in the mid-60s, to her return to painting in 1974 after suffering a mental breakdown. Includes an introduction by preeminent New York art critic Dore Ashton (who describes Martin’s works as "emotionally precise" and "executed with the greatest finesse") alongside reproductions of the transcript of a lecture Martin gave at Yale University in 1976 titled "We are in the midst of reality responding with joy." Illustrated with color plates; with an exhibition checklist and bibliography. Small split to head of spine; unclipped dust jacket with light soiling and edgewear. Very good. Item #8765
