Asylum Piece and Other Stories

New York: Michael Kesend Publishing, Ltd., 1980. Reprint Edition. Octavo, publisher’s black cloth, spine stamped in metallic pink, slate endpapers, original illustrated dust jacket.

Reprint edition of the British author and enigma's debut work of fiction under the name Anna Kavan (originally published in 1940). Born Helen Emily Woods, Kavan had previously penned six novels under her married name, Helen Ferguson, before assuming a new name (as both nom de plume and legal identity), an ice-blonde bob, and an anarchic, largely autobiographical writing style. Kavan’s radical reinvention and her use "nocturnal language" was heralded by this gathering of Kafkaesque short fiction, which was released shortly after her emergence from a Swiss sanatorium in 1938, where she was admitted after her first suicide attempt. Dust jacket designed by Jackie Schuman. Slight dustiness to cloth; unclipped dust jacket with small closed tear to top edge of upper panel and lightest edgewear. Near fine. Item #8745
