New York: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1965. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the two Austrian greats held at the Guggenheim Museum in 1965. Curated by Guggenheim foundation and museum director Thomas M. Messer, the exhibition presented a healthy selection of works by Klimt and his former student Schiele demonstrating the similarities and divergences in their work. Notably, the show was the first organized by Messer at the museum and is considered to have generated interest in the Symbolist movement, influencing the burgeoning psychedelic sensibility of the era. This catalog comprises a section for each artist with a focus on Klimt’s later portraits and a full retrospective of Schiele, with respective chronologies, essays, and exhibition checklists. Illustrated in black-and-white, with some plates in color. List of additions to the exhibition laid in. Fine. Item #8732
