Byker

London: Jonathan Cape, 1983. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.

First edition of Finnish photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s debut book. Best known for her work documenting urban landscapes, Konttinen gained prominence for her involvement in the Amber Film and Photography Collective, a group committed to capturing the sociocultural changes in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. In 1969 she moved to what would become the Byker Wall estate in the East End of Newcastle, where she forged close connections with the community, enabling her to authentically capture the experiences of the district's residents amidst a period of urban redevelopment. Immediately garnering critical acclaim, and chosen by the Observer as one of its top ten books of 1983, the series comprises images Konttinen captured while living in the area for six years before her home was demolished and six years afterward, alongside her introduction and fragments of interviews throughout. Illustrated with black-and-white plates. Traces of sticker residue to lower wrap. Light edgewear. Very good. Item #8725
