Paris: Repères éditions d'art, 1983. Limited Edition. Quarto, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps lettered in red and black, french flaps.
Essay by French semiotician Barthes on the work of Romanian-American artist and cartoonist Steinberg, renowned for his many ingenious New Yorker magazine covers, with nine full-page drawings in color and black-and-white by Steinberg done for this edition, and inscribed by him on the front free endpaper to his literary agent: "For Wendy Weil / Love from / Saul ST / June '83." "Être reconnu, c'est le propre du signe; mais les figures-signes de Steinberg traversent vite (et sûrement) la langue générale de l'humanité pour retrouver ma langue personelle: l'idolecte de Steinberg (comme diraient les linguistes) est aussi le mien." Weil, known among New York publishing circles for her low-key but determined style, began handling reprint rights for Steinberg as a junior agent at the Phyllis Jackson agency; they soon formed a bond and Weil took Steinberg with her when she started her own agency in 1986. Unnumbered "out-of-series" copy from a total edition of 120 (including 20 hors commerce copies issued with an additional suite of the drawings). Text in French. Minor soiling and edgewear to wraps. Near fine. A wonderful association copy. Item #863
