Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Eugène Delacroix and other French Romantic artists held at the Mead Museum at Amherst College in 1988. Beginning when Napoleon invaded Egypt and Syria in the late 18th century through the French conquest of Algeria in 1830, French artists began depicting "foreign" cultures in their work. Curated by the museum director Frank Anderson Trapp, the show presented works with Oriental subject matter by Delacroix, Antoine-Louis Barye, Adrien Dauzats, Théodore Chassériau, Eugène Fromentin, Théodore Géricault, and others.
