Les Liaisons Dangereuses. [Dangerous Acquaintances]

London: The Folio Society, 1962. 1st Edition Thus. Octavo, publisher's teal silk cloth, spine gilt, illustrated endpapers, original paperboard slipcase.

Folio Society edition of Laclos’s controversial portrayal of decadent society. Published shortly before the French Revolution in 1782, the epistolary novel tells the tale of the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, two French aristocrats engaged in a game of seduction and revenge to exploit societal norms for revenge and personal entertainment. Causing considerable scandal due to its explicit and morally provocative content, the book was not officially banned but was included in the the Church’s Index of Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books) and notably disapproved of by Marie Antoinette. Edited and with an extensive biographical introduction by acclaimed English writer and poet Richard Aldington. Illustrated in black-and-white with twelve wood engravings by Raymond Hawthorn. Founded in 1947, the Folio Society is a privately owned London-based publisher (and previously a bookstore) which produces illustrated hardcover editions of classic fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and children's books. Light toning to spine, else fine. Item #8532
