Winter Insomnia. Poems by Raymond Carver. Prints by Robert McChesney

Santa Cruz, CA: Kayak Books Inc., 1970. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.

Signed first edition of legendary short fiction writer and poet Raymond Carver’s first regularly published book (and second book of poetry). While better known for his short stories, Carver began his career as a poet, often projecting a masculine persona characterized by the reckless activities of the first half of his life, often under the influence of heavy drink, what he called his "Bad Raymond" days. This collection gathers 29 original poems, and is dedicated to Carver’s close friend, the poet Dennis Schmitz, whom he met at Sacramento State in the 1960s while Carver was auditing his class. Illustrated with color prints by Bay Area abstract expressionist Robert McChesney. Published by Kayak Books, an imprint and poetry magazine overseen by George Hitchcock from 1964 to 1984. Signed by Carver to title page. One of 1000 unnumbered copies. Minor soiling to wraps, else fine. Item #8420
