A Masque of Mercy

New York: Henry Holt, 1947. 1st Edition. Large octavo, publisher's navy buckram over textured tan paper-covered boards, spine and upper board stamped in black and gilt, original paperboard slipcase.

Signed limited first edition of towering American poet Robert Frost’s 1947 play. Based on the New Testament, the modern rendition of the Book of Jonah is set in a bookstore outside of New York City where the owner, named Keeper (for "shopkeeper" and "My Brother’s Keeper"), his wife Jesse Bel (Jezebel), her psychoanalyst Paul (as the Apostle), and Jonas Dove (as Jonah) philosophize on life’s profound mysteries. Likely inspired by the horrors of WWII and the loss of several family members, the text also is patently influenced by John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The book was intended as a complement or foil to A Masque of Reason, published two years prior. Numbered 741 of 751 copies signed by Frost on the limitation page. Book fine, light wear to slipcase.
