"April Showers"

"April Showers". [Postcard Invite]

New York: Studio 54, 1983. 5.75"x4.25" photo-illustrated postcard, printed in black to both sides.

Invitation to a 1983 event at the legendary New York nightclub during its twilight years. From 1977 to 1986, Studio 54 was known for its disco music and exclusive celebrity clientele. Co-owned by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, it faced numerous legal troubles and financial scandals (including tax evasion) during its peak in 1979, leading to its eventual decline and official closure in 1986. Held while the "Last Impresario of Studio 54" Mark Fleischman was at the helm, the event showcased a performance by glitter rock group the Screaming Violets. The band was originally composed of queer performance artist Hibiscus (born George Edgerly Harris III) and his sisters Jayne Anne, Eloise, and Mary Lou Harris, who worked as coat check girls at the club. After Hibiscus died from AIDS-related complications in 1982, the sisters continued in their brother’s footsteps in the mid-1980s. Addressee inkstamp to verso. Light soiling. Near fine. Item #8264
