Mode Avantgarde. No. 1. Avril - Mai 1978

Paris: Gunpress, 1978. Quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated wraps.

First issue of Danish photographer and provocateur Gunnar Larsen’s French fashion magazine Mode Avantgarde. Larsen began his career as a travel journalist, contributing work to Danish magazines and newspapers throughout the 1950s. After moving to Paris in 1959, he became known for his portraits of models and celebrities such as Roger Vadim, Catherine Deneuve, Jane Birkin, and Twiggy, leading to contributions to major magazines such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, and Vogue. After working for Elite Models, which he helped John Casablancas open in 1972, Larsen entered the world of publishing with Gunnar’s Coiffure and Mode International before finalizing the magazine’s title as Mode Avantgarde (the "Mode" would be dropped soon after). Launched in 1978, the triannual magazine predominantly featured editorials shot by Larsen, almost always in black-and-white. Avantgarde was published into the mid-1980s until Larsen’s eyesight began deteriorating; he died in 1990. This issue comprises numerous photos by Larsen featuring his regular Danish models ("Gunnar’s girls"), an interview with Catherine Deneuve with a portrait by Sarah Moon, a brief profile on Brigitte Bardot's visit to Greenland, a party report on Yves St. Laurent’s latest collection, and more. Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white. Cover illustration by Beate Brömse, a fashion illustrator for Yves Saint Laurent. Light edgewear. Near fine. Epic 70s euro-chic. Item #8197
