Item #8020 First Love and Other Sorrows. Harold Brodkey.

First Love and Other Sorrows

New York: Dial Press, 1957. 1st Edition. Small octavo, publisher’s scarlet cloth, spine stamped in white, original illustrated dust jacket.

"He was still immersed in the dim, wet wonder of the folded wings that might open if someone loved him..." First edition of American master of short fiction Harold Brodkey’s debut book. Comprising nine pieces, all originally published in the New Yorker, the semi-autobiographical story sequence describes the romantic escapades of various young men (adolescents, college students, and newlyweds), interweaving recurring characters, themes, and motifs. Published when he was only 28 years old, the collection established Brodkey’s early reputation, bolstered by the promise of an autobiographical novel-in-progress, only published three decades later as The Runaway Soul (1991). Unclipped dust jacket with light rubbing and edgewear, and light foxing to verso. Near fine. Item #8020
