So Long. Stories 1987-1992

Santa Rosa, C: Black Sparrow, 1993. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's orange cloth over illustrated paper-covered boards, printed paper label to spine, apricot endpapers, original acetate dust jacket.

Signed limited first edition of short story writer Lucia Berlin’s late collection published by John Martin's Black Sparrow Press. Berlin won critical acclaim and several awards during her lifetime, but was largely overlooked by the reading public. She subsisted working a series of odd jobs and teaching writing, and suffered from poor health. Her selected stories were published posthumously in 2015, under the title A Manual for Cleaning Women, with an introduction by Lydia Davis, and became a bestseller. Notably, Black Sparrow published all three of Berlin’s full-length collections, So Long bookended by Homesick (1990) and Where I Live Now (1999). Number 92 of 100 copies signed and numbered on the colophon, from a total edition of 326. Designed by Martin’s wife and collaborator Barbara. Fine in original acetate dust jacket, which has a small patch of sticker residue to upper flap. Item #7947
