Kittatinny. A Tale of Magic

New York: Daughters Publishing Co., Inc., 1978. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.

First edition of radical feminist author and academic Joanna Russ’s sole children’s book. A bildungsroman intended for middle school readers, the allegorical hero’s quest centers on Kit, a precocious eleven-year-old who goes on a magical journey. Subverting archetypal and heterosexist fairy tale motifs, like the majority of Russ’s oeuvre, the novel challenges gender roles and societal norms through fantasy and speculative world building. Published by Vermont-based (later New York-based) radical feminist lesbian press Daughters Inc. Founded by June Davis Arnold and Parke Patricia Bowman, Daughters is notable for publishing the first edition of Rita Mae Brown’s Rubyfruit Jungle (1973). Illustrated in black-and-white by Loretta Li, who also provided illustrations for Rubyfruit Jungle. Stated first edition to copyright page. Light edgewear to wraps. Very good. Item #7758
