Item #7736 Semi-Permeable Membranes. Julian Beck.

Semi-Permeable Membranes. Twenty Songs of the Revolution

New York: Bliss Press, 1984. 2nd Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff paper wraps printed in black, tissue endpapers.

Collection of songs written by Julian Beck, the iconoclastic director, writer, and founder of the Living Theatre. Alongside his creative partner and wife, Judith Malina, Beck established and operated the politically radical theater troupe as a means of engaging "liberatory poetics" and other experimental practices. Originally published in 1963, this second edition includes 20 song-poems, which were likely collaboratively written and used in performances and theatrical productions. Includes a biographical introduction by Ilion Troya, a member of the Living Theatre, who describes the poems as a "moving picture" of Beck's mind. Cover photo by Ira Cohen; with bibliography. Fine.
